Good News Friday
Democracy's Bright Spots
Democracy wins when people organize, courts defend rights, and communities support each other
In a week that could have felt overwhelming, we saw proof that resistance works. From Wisconsin's Supreme Court protecting LGBTQ+ youth to Mexican firefighters rushing to help Texas flood victims, this week showed the power of solidarity, organizing, and people refusing to back down.
The theme that emerges from these stories is clear: when people organize, show up, and support each other - across borders, across differences, across political divides - democracy gets stronger. Courts can still protect vulnerable communities. Workers can still win. Artists can still force uncomfortable conversations. And communities still help communities, no matter what politicians say.
Here's what democracy looked like this week:
🏛️ Democracy Wins (Recent Court & Legislative Victories)
Wisconsin Supreme Court Protects LGBTQ+ Youth from Harmful "Conversion Therapy"
Wisconsin's Supreme Court ruled 4-3 on July 8 that LGBTQ+ youth will now be protected from "conversion therapy" - the scientifically discredited and harmful practice of trying to force LGBTQ+ people to become heterosexual.¹ For years, Wisconsin's professional licensing board tried to ban therapists from using this harmful practice on minors, but Republican legislators kept blocking the protection.² The Supreme Court ruled that legislators can't override the ban, clearing the way for Wisconsin to join 23 other states (plus D.C.) in protecting LGBTQ+ youth from this dangerous practice.³
Here's the good in this good news: State courts are still willing to protect kids when politicians won't. This ruling shows that persistent advocacy and legal challenges can overcome years of obstruction to achieve life-saving protections for LGBTQ+ youth. Democracy's safety nets caught vulnerable kids before they could be harmed.
Supreme Court Upholds Free Preventive Healthcare for 150 Million Americans
The Supreme Court voted 6-3 on June 27 to uphold a key provision of the Affordable Care Act that was under attack by Christian-owned businesses who objected to covering HIV prevention drugs (PrEP).⁴ The challengers argued that the expert panel making coverage recommendations was unconstitutional because members weren't presidentially appointed.⁵ The Court's decision ensures that 150 million people will continue getting preventive services including cancer screenings, HIV prevention drugs, immunizations, and contraception at no cost.⁶
Here's the good in this good news: Even this conservative Supreme Court said "no way" to gutting preventive healthcare for 150 million Americans. This decision protects healthcare access that saves over 100,000 lives annually and shows that basic healthcare access still has broad legal protection.
Federal Judge Issues Nationwide Block Against Trump's Birthright Citizenship Order
U.S. District Judge Joseph LaPlante issued a preliminary injunction on Thursday blocking President Trump's executive order that sought to end birthright citizenship nationwide.⁷ The judge granted class action status to protect over 150,000 newborns annually who would lose citizenship under Trump's January 20 order denying citizenship to children born in the U.S. to parents who are in the country illegally or temporarily.⁸ LaPlante ruled that depriving U.S. citizenship causes irreparable harm, emphasizing that citizenship is a vital privilege protected by the 14th Amendment.⁹ Lawyers had warned that tens of thousands of babies could face statelessness and loss of fundamental rights under the order.¹⁰
Here's the good in this good news: Federal courts are defending one of our most fundamental constitutional principles - that anyone born on U.S. soil is a citizen. This judge acted quickly to protect 150,000+ babies annually from losing their citizenship, showing that even with political pressure, some judges will still defend core constitutional rights.
Federal Judge Blocks Planned Parenthood Funding Cuts
A federal judge in Boston temporarily blocked the Trump administration from enforcing provisions in the newly passed "Big Beautiful Bill" that would cut Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood health centers.¹¹ U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani issued a 14-day restraining order after Planned Parenthood sued, arguing the cuts would devastate healthcare access for over one million patients nationwide and force up to 200 health centers to close.¹² The provision would bar Medicaid users from receiving care at any provider that also offers abortion services, even though federal law already prohibits Medicaid funding for abortions.¹³
Here's the good in this good news: Courts can still act as a check on executive power, even when facing massive legislative packages designed to circumvent oversight. This rapid legal response protected healthcare access for over one million patients, showing that judges appointed across different administrations will defend constitutional principles when lives are at stake.
Virginia Democrats Launch "Operation Virginia Victory" Coordinated Campaign
The Democratic Party of Virginia announced a massive coordinated campaign on July 1 designed to mobilize voters across all 100 House districts - the first time in recent history Democrats are running candidates everywhere.¹⁴ In just the first week, over 7,400 volunteers have already taken action and attended volunteer events, showing unprecedented early engagement.¹⁵ The campaign includes door-to-door canvassing, phone banks, text messaging, and voter protection efforts ahead of November 2025 elections.¹⁶
Here's the good in this good news: Grassroots energy is translating into actual organizing capacity. Over 7,400 volunteers showed up in the first week alone to build the biggest voter mobilization in recent Virginia history - exactly the kind of sustained engagement that wins campaigns and shows democracy working from the ground up.
✊ Resistance & Organizing Progress
Union Organizers Standing Strong Despite Federal Charges
The Department of Justice charged SEIU-USWW President David Huerta with conspiracy to impede an officer (carrying up to 6 years in prison) after he was arrested at a Los Angeles protest against militarized ICE raids and briefly hospitalized with a head injury.¹⁷ Rather than backing down, multiple prominent unions expressed solidarity, with UNITE HERE members joining an SEIU rally declaring "Todos somos Huerta" (We are all Huerta), while regional Teamsters and UAW branches plus the national AFL-CIO all spoke out in support.¹⁸
Here's the good in this good news: When the government tried to crush a union leader with federal charges, the entire labor movement rallied to his defense. Labor solidarity held strong in the face of intimidation, showing that unions understand attacks on one leader threaten the entire movement - exactly the collective backbone needed to resist authoritarianism.
Historic Union Contract Agreement in Gaming Industry
The Communications Workers of America announced that ZeniMax video game employees (owned by Microsoft) reached a tentative agreement that, if ratified, would be the first union contract in the gaming industry and Microsoft's first U.S. union contract.¹⁹ The breakthrough came after ZeniMax workers formed Microsoft's first official U.S. union in 2023, inspiring other Microsoft employees to organize.²⁰ The contract includes a 13.5% pay raise effective July 1, AI protection clauses, and minimum pay standards for different job categories. Union members vote on ratification June 20.²¹
Here's the good in this good news: Gaming workers just scored the industry's first-ever union contract with Microsoft - complete with 13.5% raises and AI protections! This proves that even tech giants can be organized when workers stick together, and sets a precedent that could inspire gaming workers industry-wide to demand better conditions.
"Dictator Approved" Resistance Art Installed on National Mall
This week, anonymous artist or artists installed a powerful sculpture on the National Mall featuring a gold thumbs up emoji smashing down on the Statue of Liberty's crown - a direct response to Trump's June 14 military parade through Washington D.C. that featured tanks, military vehicles, and imagery reminiscent of authoritarian regimes like North Korea, Russia, and China.²² The sculpture's pedestal bears gold plaques with actual quotes from dictators like Putin, Orban, Kim Jong Un, and Bolsonaro praising Trump, creating a stark visual connection between American authoritarianism and global autocracy.²³ This isn't the first guerrilla art installation to appear - it's part of a growing resistance art movement that has included the satirical Pelosi "poop desk" memorial (mocking January 6th rioters who defecated in the Capitol), a tiki torch installation referencing Charlottesville's "very fine people," and a golden TV playing footage of Trump dancing with Jeffrey Epstein.²⁴
Here's the good in this good news: Fearless artists are turning the National Mall into a democracy classroom, using permits and legal installations to make authoritarians absolutely furious. Creative resistance is spreading, and the fact that the White House responds with fury proves the art is hitting its target. Artists are weaponizing creativity for democracy.
🌍 International Democracy & Solidarity
Mexico Sends Emergency Aid to Texas Flood Victims
After catastrophic flash floods killed over 100 people during the July 4 weekend in Texas - among the deadliest in U.S. history - Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum immediately sent firefighters and rescue personnel to help.²⁵ More than 20 volunteer firefighters from Acuña, Mexico (near the border), joined rescue teams in Kerrville, Texas, bringing specialized drones and water rescue equipment to help locate dozens of missing persons.²⁶ The crew arrived Sunday morning and got straight to work alongside Texas first responders, with one volunteer explaining "There's no flag or countries in between firefighters. We're humans and we're helping humans."²⁷
Here's the good in this good news: While politicians argue about walls and tariffs, Mexican firefighters grabbed their rescue gear and rushed to help flood victims in Texas because that's what neighbors do in a crisis. This is mutual aid in action, proving that communities will take care of communities no matter what the politicians say. When the waters rise, humanity rises higher!
Progress Tracker: Democracy Momentum Building
✅ 24 states now ban conversion therapy (Wisconsin joins the list)
✅ 150 million Americans retain free access to preventive healthcare
✅ 70%+ win rate for workers in NLRB union elections - highest in 15 years²⁸
✅ Progressive electoral gains in major cities like NYC
✅ Cross-border solidarity in crisis response (Mexico → Texas)
✅ Labor organizing breaking into new industries (gaming/tech)
🌟 Look What We're Doing!
We're not just resisting - we're building. Every court victory, every union contract signed, every guerrilla art installation that makes authoritarians furious, every firefighter crossing borders to save lives - this is us creating the world we want to live in.
We're making democracy stronger through our organizing. We're creating solidarity across borders through our mutual aid. We're building networks of care that transcend what politicians tell us is possible. From Wisconsin's Supreme Court to Virginia's volunteer army to Mexico's rescue teams - this is collective power in action.
All of us. Together. And it's working.
This is a marathon, not a sprint. Take care of yourself. Rest when you need to. Celebrate these wins. Because when you show up tomorrow - whether it's at a city council meeting, a union drive, or just checking on a neighbor - you're part of this unstoppable force for democracy.
